Genadendal

Genadendal is such a worthwhile visit from Greyton. From Zebra Moon we offer the option of a 7km walk to Genadendal, you can either walk back or we will arrange transport for you.

Genadendal has so many attractions that it is difficult to describe, you really need to get there and see for yourself. However I will attempt to paint a picture that does justice to this special place. If asked why you should go to Genadendal I would say.....

The Beauty- Set right up against the Riviersonderend Mountains,it is a beautiful setting. The beautifully preserved old buildings in traditional Cape style, set around a Church square full of large old oak trees. This gives a very tranquil and peaceful air to Genadendal.

The History-The oldest Mission station in South Africa-dating back to 1738. The themes and stories of the Western Cape and the whole of  South Africa have all  been played out here, often years before the rest of the Country. The history of Genadendal is a microcosm of South African history and all encapsulated in one small village. You will learn about the original inhabitants, colonial history, apartheid and the new South Africa. All this is presented so well in...

The Museums- have an amazing collection of artefacts collected from the Village. The museums include the Mission Museum-the contents of which were declared a National Cultural Treasure. This Museum has a wide ranging collection of artefacts, most produced and used at the Mission. The varying fortunes of Genadendal are mapped out for you as they changed with the pressures coming from a hostile environment. Plus the Cottage Museum, the Printing History Museum and the Old Mill.

The people - friendly, proud of their heritage and keen to share their history with you.

Faith - the incredible story of the faith of the first converts.

Firsts and only's - Genadendal was a village at the leading edge of history: first teachers training college in South africa; the oldest fire engine and pipe organ in South Africa on display; the oldest mission station in South Africa; the first childrens books in the Cape printed here.....

Plus -  a perfectly restored, operational water mill; an operating blacksmith; coffee shop; a two day hike into the Mountains; a grand old Church with understated beauty; the chance of hearing members of the Genadendal basuinkoor (brass band) practicing.

This is one place where you wont be saying "where to next" after half an hour. Come and enjoy, take your time, spend several hours here and savour the atmosphere. You will leave having learnt a huge amount about our History.
